The only missing element in Reynold’s reference to Heinlein’s Starship Troopers was his failure to reference the required noncredit course in History & Moral Philosophy, taught by a voter (i.e., one who had demonstrated a willingness to sacrifice for the common good).

In modern terms, I would make History and Moral Philosophy the central element of a Common Core curriculum.
