Years and years ago, when I was an instructor at Penn State, an older professor I shared an office with explained how he knew his family was middle class: when buying anything, from a bicycle for him to a car for themselves, they never bought the high end, never bought the cheapest, always bought the mid-priced. I'll never forget his definition
