AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES traveling in convoys will run into this inevitable tradeoff: a much higher risk of a multi-car pile-up. Many, many years ago, I came across an Army research study showing that 45 mph was the 'optimum' speed for a military convoy to minimize travel time. It seems that study is about to be validated.
