Astronautics (space) was added to the portfolio in 1958, when the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), but the mission remained the same -- exploration. Manned space is a component - but only a component - of NASA’s mission.
