SEPARATION OF SCHOOL AND STATE:

The problem with public schools ... is government compulsion. Soviet citizens learned the hard way what to expect when government runs the farms and operates the grocery stores: long lines, poor quality, empty shelves. Why should we expect anything different from public education? Government runs the schools, hires the teachers, sets the curriculum – and assigns the students. Of course the result is dysfunction and controversy.

Perhaps a constitutional amendment, formally separating the government from any authority over education is the answer. Harvard grads can retain their right to remain ignorant and run the government, but education is too important to be left in their hands.

KRUGMAN: Choosing waterboarding over drone killings ‘a very odd notion’.

It's been estimated that over 4,000 people had been killed by drone strikes, many of them innocents. By contrast, three detainees have been waterboarded. None of them were killed; and none of them were innocent.

But waterboarding requires Gitmo (or some similar detention facility). Got it.
