EXPLAINING GUN CONTROL: a timely reminder.

On Wednesday, October 16, 1991, [Suzanna] Hupp and her parents were having lunch at the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen [TX]. She had left her gun in her car to comply with Texas state law at the time, which forbade carrying a concealed weapon. When George Hennard drove his truck into the cafeteria and opened fire on the patrons, Hupp instinctively reached into her purse for her weapon, but it was in her vehicle. Her father, Al Gratia, tried to rush Hennard and was shot in the chest. As the gunman reloaded, Hupp escaped through a broken window and believed that her mother, Ursula Gratia, was behind her. Hennard put a gun to her mother's head as she cradled her mortally wounded husband. Hupp's mother and father were killed along with twenty-one other persons. Hennard also wounded some twenty others.

I remember it only too well, since at the time of the massacre, I was living about 90 miles south of Killeen in Mountain City TX.



Gun control advocates argue that strict gun laws could have saved those lives by preventing George Hennard from acquiring the weapons he used. But that ignores the dual question: how many of those lives could have been saved had less strict gun laws allowed Suzanna Hupp to carry her weapon into the cafeteria?

There are roughly 12,000 gun-related homicides annually in the U.S. How many could have been prevented had there been armed and able citizens in the vicinity at the time of the homicide?

I thought it was a good idea for the Constitution to be read aloud on the floor of the House of Representatives as that body kicked off its new session. The reading reminded those present of the contents of our fundamental law and symbolized a commitment to adhere to that law.

But what seemed like a good idea turned out to be a great one. For instead of good naturedly going along with the exercise, or suffering in silence, a number of leftists publicly displayed their lack of comfort with, if not contempt for, the Constitution. Thus, the public received its clearest indication to date that the left regards the words of the Constitution as an impediment to its agenda.

[T]he reading exercise proved to be such a stroke of genius. It gave the country a revealing glimpse of how the left really views the Constitution.

According to Fox News, we, the people, seem to agree. In an online poll asking if we had read the Constitution, 70% said “yes, and so should Congress.” Another 18% said they had read parts.

OBAMACARE EXPLAINED

The kids filed back into class Monday morning. They were very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something, then give a talk on productive salesmanship.

Little Sally led off: "I sold girl scout cookies and I made $30," she said proudly, "My sales approach was to appeal to the customer's civil spirit and I credit that approach for my obvious success."

"Very good," said the teacher.

Little Jenny was next: "I sold magazines," she said, "I made $45 and I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events."

"Very good, Jenny," said the teacher.

Eventually, it was Johnny's turn. The teacher held her breath.... Little Johnny walked to the front of the classroom and dumped a box full of cash on the teacher's desk. "$2,467," he said proudly.

"$2,467!" cried the teacher, "What in the world were you selling?"

"Toothbrushes," said Little Johnny.

"Toothbrushes?" echoed the teacher. "How could you possibly sell enough tooth brushes to make that much money?"

"I found the busiest corner in town," said Little Johnny, "I set up a Dip & Chip stand, cnd I gave everybody who walked by a free sample. They all said the same thing, ‘Hey, this tastes like dog shit!’ Then I would say,’It is dog shit. Wanna buy a toothbrush?’"

"I used the Obama governmental approach of giving you something shitty, but looks good, for free, and then making you pay to get the shitty taste out of your mouth."

Lesson learned (I hope).

There are thousands of great colleges around the nation at which you can learn any skill or profession you choose. And in none of those colleges will you be so indoctrinated in contempt for your nation, its history and values as you will be in the Ivies. Give yourself a boost in life: for all the supposed benefits you'd get in an Ivy League school, you'll learn more and gain a more realistic view of your nation and the world if you attend a college that's not among the Ivies. Learn elsewhere, and graduate without having your nose so stuck in the air that you believe America isn't a force for good in the world.
