AMMO GRRRLL returns with her take on 'Yes Means Yes'.
MORE THAN A THIRD of those who buy fitness wearables abandon them within a few months. Could it be that they find they don't like human (or mechanical) nannies nagging them 24/7?

Especially in light of the fact that the nannies are wrong most of the time?
MEGA-INSURERS could cost consumers. Could? The proper verb is 'will'.

And for the socialist Left, that's not a bug; it's a feature.
UNLESS IT'S YOUR PRIVACY: Medical privacy is overrated. I can understand the medical community's desire for gobs of data, but I don't think that desire obligates me to participate ... especially when it is patently obvious that there is no meaningful way to protect that data from exploitation by those whose motives are, shall we say, less pristine.
WHY AM I NOT SURPRISED? State Department admits Hillary did not turn over all emails. The Left would never allow a little thing like honesty get in the way of accomplishing its mission of controlling America.
SPACE-X FALCON 9 launch failure just now about 2 minutes post-launch.
IEEE SPECTRUM: What does “Responsible Innovation” mean? In a nutshell, it's a politically correct buzzphrase for control of engineering by the Left, who will determine what is, or isn't, 'responsible'.
THE TRAGEDY of California's bureaucrat-made drought.
California "is a classic case of liberals being willing to sacrifice other people's lives and livelihoods at the altar of ideology." -- Carly Fiorina
And, of course, their money.
SPACEX WILL TRY ONCE AGAIN to land the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a barge in the Atlantic.

The launch is scheduled for 10:21 a.m. EDT, and you can watch it live here beginning at 9 a.m.

POWERLINE'S WEEK IN PICTURES, Confederacy of Dunces edition, is up. While I appreciate the need to 'remove' the Stars & Bars (first picture), this remains my favorite:

I'd prefer to ban the easily offended, however. Go see the rest; there are some very good ones this week.
NOEMIE EMERY: "What is it that South Carolinians know that people in Maryland, New York and Missouri do not?"
The claim is that the [Confederate] flag stands for racism and rage, and as such may have inspired the killer, and this may have substance. But the fact is that while the Confederate flag flew over the capitol, the state underneath it has become one of the most diverse and least polarized states of the union, and perhaps the most tolerant.

Of the many cases of white-on-black deaths that have roiled the country in the past year, the massacre in South Carolina has been one example in which death united, and did not divide, the whole population. South Carolina has been the one state in the union in which black people seem to feel they have found justice. If what's in a flag is what one sees in it, what some people saw may be wrong.

In 2010, the first Tea Party election, South Carolina chose 38-year-old Nikki Haley to become one of only six female governors, and the second governor descended from Indian immigrants (the first was Bobby Jindal in Louisiana, another southern conservative state). In the same year, Tim Scott, then 44 years old, defeated a son of Strom Thurmond in a primary election for Thurmond's old seat in Congress, becoming the first black Republican elected to the House from the Deep South since Reconstruction.

In 2013, Jim DeMint left the Senate, and Governor Haley appointed Scott to replace him. In 2014, Scott won a special election, making him the first black person elected to the Senate from the old Confederacy since 1881. His margin of victory was 23 points. South Carolina is now the one state in the union whose top three elected officials include two racial and ethnic minorities and only one white male.

It is also the one state in which killings of black men by whites did not lead to violence.
Maybe, just maybe, the flag doesn't stand for what the racists on the Left think it does. They might think about asking, not assuming, sometime....
NEW HORIZONS SPACECRAFT faces its toughest task: finding Pluto.
SWEDISH SUPERCAR goes from zero to fabulous to zero in record time. And then I catch up at the next stoplight....
I'D SETTLE FOR MORE LEGROOM: Technology to make air travel less stressful in the future.
PRIVACY? DATA SECURITY? In the era of Big Government, surely you jest.
EXPLAINING WHY I no longer subscribe to the Washington Post.
MONA CHAREN: "I wouldn’t expect the government to accept liability for screwing up, now or ever."

Smart lady.
NO EXCEPTIONS: Organized labor's push for an exemption to the $15 minimum wage they fought hard for has been refused.

Their slogan, "a union job at less-than-minimum-wage, or no job at minimum wage" hasn't seemed to catch fire....
TECHNOLOGY: Cheap lidar for automatic braking.

Sorry, but this strikes me as a feel-good by Nanny-Staters with too much time on their hands. The lidar is only good for 'parking lot' collisions where the Nanny State has already mandated (fundamentally worthless) collision-resistant bumpers.

Practically, the only winners are the auto repair shops, who benefit from increased inattentitive driving.
BENGHAZI INVESTIGATORS: Is the State Deptartment lying, or is Hillary?

Why not both?
'UNCLE SUCKER' falls for another food scare. And of course it is the innocents who are perfectly capable of making their own choices that are the ones who must suffer.

Progressive nanny-staters should must be forever banned from the levers of power.
PILLSBURY PHARMACEUTICALS is still behind the curve in aggressive pandering. Watch any cable channel (preferably a news channel) for proof.
IT'S GONNA GET CROWDED UP THERE: Europe's Airbus Group will design and build about 900 satellites for privately owned OneWeb Ltd, which plans to offer high-speed, space-based Internet access to billions of people worldwide.

Inevitably there's going to be a bit shortage somewhere....
VOTE SMOD 2016: I love the bumper sticker....

More here. And here.

BEND OVER (AND SMILE): ObamaCare set to affect more small businesses in 2016.

The bright side, perhaps, is that maybe enough people voters will be hurting in 2016 to force an abortion.
KEVIN D. WILLIAMSON: We have officially reached peak Leftism. Heinlein's 'crazy years' have finally come to pass.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: putting women on U.S. currency.

Why don't we try something new? Transgender, maybe?
GROCERIES: Not for sale in Vermont. Let them eat Ben & Jerry's ice cream.

Seriously, if I were a grocery manufacturer, I'd simply mark my products 'Not for sale in Vermont' and get on with life.
THE PROGRESSIVE'S N-WORD.
HOW TO CRIPPLE THE POWER GRID: shit on it.
REDISTRIBUTION: coming to a neighborhood near you.

Only the Obama administration is redistributing poverty, not wealth.

Random thought: I wonder if Obama read Asimov's The Caves of Steel as a youth....
SAYING WHAT NO ONE ELSE WILL: "Your ass gonna be in jail with them."
MAY THE FARCE BE WITH YOU: Reflecting on the 2-1/2 years since Obama's reelection, I'm reminded of this Karl Marx quotation:
History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.
We're well into the farce phase of progressivism.
ROBO-TRUCKS come to Canada's oil sands.

JOURNALISM 101 FOR 2016:

Thursday, June 25, 2015

A POX ON BOTH THEIR HOUSES: Democrats plan to shut down government and blame the Republicans.

Personally, I hope they do. And leave it shut down. After 6-1/2 years of progressive governance from the Obama administration a complete shutdown would be an improvement.
THE SUPREME COURT upholds ObamaCare subsidies.

My intuition that the law is an ass has turned to certainty....
IF ONLY THEY WILL: Justices can settle America's class action problem. As an unwilling participant in several class-action suits, I think they should be banned outright and forever.
ELECTRIC CARS may be worse for the environment than gasoline-powered cars.

But in the progressive reality, only non-polluting electricity comes from the plug in the wall.
LYING, CHEATING, AND STEALING in defense of the (progressives') environment is no vice.

Yeah, right.

DECISION ENGINEERING: an emerging field?
It’s time for companies to stop relying solely on spreadsheets to make decisions and start using new methods, according to several management experts.

Decision engineering is a field that designs decisions themselves as if they were tangible projects, such as building robots or computer systems, using the same engineering methodologies and techniques. Professionals are needed now in this area more than ever due to complex issues that go beyond generating revenue. Government policies, global growth, environmental impact, and a society with needs that constantly change are just some of the factors that need to be considered when helping organizations making smarter choices.
It's a pile of steaming claptrap, and I'm sorry to say that the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, of which I'm a Life Senior Member) has fallen for it, hook, line, and sinker. But go ahead, read it anyway.
SAD BUT TRUE: Small-town airports close as fewer pilots take to skies.

Once upon a time I was a private pilot. It was great fun, but today flying is practically beyond the means of any but the wealthy and the most dedicated. I used to go to every air show I could find; today I avoid them, the memories are too bitter.
NOEMIE EMERY: Temperament counts.
President Obama, wrote the Washington Post's Greg Jaffe in a recent story about the president's view of his country, articulates "his vision of a nation that can acknowledge and, learn from, its mistakes." Would that this vision applied to himself.

Not only does Obama never learn from mistakes, he doesn't think that he makes them, and he denies that they even exist. Any regrets for the way he passed healthcare? Not that you'd notice. Any regrets about leaving Iraq? Nope — he still thinks he "ended two wars," which the other side keeps on fighting.

The conventional view of what has gone wrong — that Obama lacked experience, and that first-term senators should be viewed with suspicion — is undercut by the fact that he has had six years of experience, and failed to learn from it. At home and abroad, Obama makes mistakes over and over, with the same result, and takes nothing from them. He disses his friends, placates aggressors and seems surprised that aggressors advance and whole regions catch fire.

He refuses to bargain with Congress, insults opponents, imposes unpopular policies by fiat and seems surprised when his measures result in court challenges, when polarization increases, opposition solidifies, divisions harden and gridlock prevails. Deal-making is the essence of politics, but Obama finds it demeaning, so he resorts to brute force when he has the means to (as in the still-festering matter of healthcare). Alternatively, as with immigration, Obama resorts to executive actions that stir angry resistance and are frequently halted by courts.

This has gone on since 2009.
Like most progressives, Obama lives in a 'reality world' where one must only think or say something is so for it to be so. He is completely incapable of recognizing the world as it exists.
FEDERALIZING VOTING. The Democrats have been 'federalizing' voting for years, and look where it's gotten us -- incompetents voting for incompetent government.

I'm old school. Voters should have to register in person to prove their bona fides for voting, and elections should be on a single day, in person, on paper ballots. Absentee ballots should be limited to those who can prove necessity, not convenience.

I'd perhaps even go so far as to require a 'proof of competence' test to vote. One must prove competence to drive an automobile lest one endanger fellow citizens; shouldn't one prove onself competent to vote for the same reason?

BE SURE TO THANK THE DEMOCRATS: Pension tidal wave is about to crash down on taxpayers. And thank Republicans, too; they're almost as guilty.

Then bend over to get your reward....
THE FEDERAL RECORDS HACK: a cyber Pearl Harbor?
[T]he lesson is that we should probably think twice before entrusting the federal government with our own information. Because if the feds can't protect their own sensitive data, on behalf of people who work for the federal government, how good a job are they likely to do on behalf of the rest of us mere citizens?
Good question: My SF-86 shows someone so straight he could be used for a ruler, but as a 52-year security clearance holder, I know many, many top-level clearance holders whose backgrounds are not nearly so pristine. Most (99-plus percent) are absolutely trustworthy, but a few are vulnerable.
HEH. Nancy Pelosi to Barack Obama: Drop dead.

The bloom is off the rose.
IT'S OUR LAND: The case for Israel is rooted in more than security.
GUN NEWS: mostly stupid, possibly bad.
NO SHIT, SHERLOCK: Clinton Foundation donors have a bribery problem.
AS CRIME SOARS IN BALTIMORE, the police are partly to the blame.

Nonsense! No police officer in his (or her) right mind is going to risk life, limb, and future knowing that their 'superiors' are willing to sacrifice them on the alter of political correctness at the first available opportunity.

The good people of Baltimore demanded an end to aggressive policing; now let make them suffer the consequences.
JON STEWART explains energy independence in a way that even environmentalists should be able to understand.

But the most dedicated will continue to willfully ignore the obvious.
HAS THE federal government ever had sex? Nope; they prefer rape.
OH, JOY: Congress looks to protect grid from hackers. God help us if they do as good a job as OPM has done protecting employee privacy.

On the (heh) 'bright' side, the EPA and its environmentalist friends want everyone off the grid 'to protect the environment'....
CARLY FIORINA FOR PRESIDENT: Here are the reasons why.

HEALTH NEWS: some good, some bad, some stupid. You make the calls.
TRUE STATEMENT: "The 2016 presidential election is a battle of color-blind, America-supporting rationalism versus race-obsessed, America-hating emotionalism."
EAGLE FLIES from worlds tallest building. What's amazing about this video is not that the eagle is taking flight from an altitude much higher that it would ever normally fly, but the speed at which it 'stoops' once it has located its handler.
GOOD RIDDANCE: Al Qaeda leader 'likely' killed in US airstrike in Libya.
JEFF JACOBY: Free Roxbury! Never happen; the government factotums can't countenance the thought that people just might be capable of running their own lives if they'd just get out of the way.
DEMOCRATS continue to steal from the poor.

DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE the "Let's Kill More Innocents Act" in Congress. The gun control bill comes less than a week after a New Jersey woman was killed while waiting for approval to buy a handgun under restrictions similar to those proposed in the bill.
YES, LET'S GO METRIC: "[T]here are two kinds of countries in the world: Those that use the metric system, and those that have walked on the Moon."

TEENAGE EMPLOYMENT at its best point since the recession of 2008-2011. But it's still above 17%. I'm sure it'll make teens happy to know they're not an unemployed as they used to be....
NOT FLAT, NEGATIVE: The liberal learning curve is flat. I read the Google report some months back. It is an excellent review of the real science, and environmentalist liberals would be well-advised to read it and pay attention.
BUYING VOTES? Clinton Family Foundation donated $100K to NYT charity the same year the newspaper endorsed Hillary for President.

AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM derives from outperforming rivals, not apologizing to them.
PROGRESSIVE WORLD: age(s) to be an adult.
14 - have an abortion
16 - vote (proposed in several places)
18 - vote; join the military; marry; sign contracts; buy guns; get tattoos.
21 - buy cigarettes (including e-cigarettes); consume marijuana
26 - buy health insurance
We're enroute to the nanny-state nirvana of perpetual childhood.

INSTAPUNDIT on 'campus crusaders':
They’re awful, nasty people using the excuse of “social justice” to justify indulging base desires of power and control. Awful, nasty, horrible people who should be recognized for what they are, denounced for what they are, and shamed for what they are. Because what they are is evil.
Evil is as evil does.

NEW YORK TIMES shows its 'gotcha' colors -- and gets soundly mocked.

Punch back twice as hard.
WHAT MAKES A PROGRESSIVE? The ability to turn on a dime. Insanity helps....
HEH: A line separating the smart from the not-so-smart.

Update: read the comments.
OH, GROW UP: Calling “Caitlyn” Jenner a “he” is a microaggression. Elizabeth Price Foley's response is priceless, and the comments are worthy of an extra bowl of popcorn.

You know, progressives act much like my kids did when they were learning to talk. Every time they learned a new word, they had to mouth it over and over and over again until I had to tell them to knock it off. I think it's time to tell them to 'knock it off and grow up'. Progressives, like children, should be seen and not heard.
THE SCOREKEEPER is on a roll this week: here, here, here, here, here, and (dear God, no) here.
AN EXCELLENT EXPLANATION of why I canceled my subscription to the Washington Post.
BREAKING: Obama wins Triple Crown.
Dan Pfeiffer @danpfeiffer
Another accomplishment -- Obama first President to have a
Triple Crown winner since Carter
Are these people completely nuts?
FORMER PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER: “Americans still have racist tendencies or feelings of superiority to people of color.” In case you haven't noticed, the most racist people in America are Democrats and progressives (but I repeat myself).

Linked from Instapundit, who has more.

Added thought: based on this post, the logical inference is that Democrats and progressives are illiterate. Which, to be honest, probably isn't far from the truth.
WALTER MATTHAU: "I never mind my wife having the last word. In fact, I'm delighted when she gets to it."
NEW YORK JUDGE: It's racist to expect teachers to be literate.

So ... being literate is equivalent to being racist. Got it.
HOIST BY THEIR OWN PETARD: Liberals now find gender identity itself oppressive.

DNC CHAIR DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: not ‘appropriate’ for Democrat candidates to challenge Hillary’s ethics. Well, yes -- the ethically challenged shouldn't challenge the ethically challenged.
FEMINISM'S COME TO THIS: Miranda's Warning.
NEW JERSEY WOMAN stabbed to death by ex while waiting for gun permit.

More: the deadly consequences of draconian gun laws.
LOOKING FOR THE PANIC BUTTON: Hillary's glide to the White House is looking more like United Flight 93.
#RUBIOCRIMESPREE: Now that the New York Times has exposed Marco Rubio’s checkered past, which features four — count ’em, four! — traffic citations since 1997, it’s only natural to wonder: What other terrible crimes has Rubio committed?
HISTORY: the ordeal of Omaha Beach. Are we deserving of the sacrifices made on our behalf?
NEW YORKERS ARE TOO DAMN FAT, ANYWAY: $15 wage could shutter 1 in 5 NY fast food joints.
UNEXPECTEDLY, OF COURSE: Murder rate skyrockets in Baltimore.

It's not just in Baltimore; it's nationwide.

And it's the blacks who are taking it in the shorts, on both sides of the equation.
POWERLINE'S Week in Pictures is up. I could do without the 'Caitlyn' Jenner cartoons, but the rest are good. Here are my two favorites this week:

TRUTH, SERVED UP WITH KINDNESS: a profile of Kirsten Powers.
UNEXPECTEDLY: Democrats fed up with union arm twisting on trade bill.

This time, truly unexpectedly, some (few) Democrats are actually coming to their senses.
D-DAY: the timeline. It's long to read as a single post, but the detail is terrific.
PASS THE POPCORN: Challengers arise to the Dowager Empress of Chappaqua.
ANOTHER EXERCISE in 'statistics don't lie, but liars use statistics'. If the data doesn't match the desired outcome, change the data.

This is roughly the equivalent of Obama's reaction to the 2014 mid-term elections: he chose to listen to those who didn't vote.
CONGRESS SHOULD WAIVE THE NEW EPA RULE before zeroing its budget. And the next President should abolish the EPA.

I wrote about its 'protected water' rule in an earlier post here.

AMMO GRRRLL takes a deep dive for potential Democrat campaign slogans.

DAY BY DAY on 2016: "Elections ... all Americans ever get are Klingons." Spot on.
THE TRUTH HURTS: "[M]ost of those agitating for diversity do so because they (rightly) feel they wouldn’t get far on merit."
NEVER MIND: another Emily Litella moment for the climatistas. Now Science 2, PseudoScience 0.

The wins continue.
OH FRACK! EPA lets the greens down. Science 1, PseudoScience 0.
GOOD NEWS: The A-10 Warthog is likely to keep flying. Ugly, but very effective.
CARLY FIORINA: the Hillary slayer.

Interesting update: Every Friday, on Fox News' Special Report there is a 'candidate casino' where Bret Baier's pundit crew 'bets' on Republican candidates for the presidential nomination. Each talking head gets $100 in 'chips' and can place them on the candidate(s) of their choice. Tonight, for the first time ever, all three put chips on Carly Fiorina. That, I think, says a lot about her potential to become the first female President of the United States.
STATISTICS NEVER LIE. But in the hands of the unethical or unwary, they can mislead.
MICHAEL BARONE: American colleges and universities have grown bloated and dysfunctional.
American colleges, dating back to Harvard's founding in 1636, have been modeled on the residential colleges of Oxford and Cambridge. The idea is that students live on or near (sometimes breathtakingly beautiful) campuses, where they can learn from and interact with inspired teachers.
I'm somewhat amused by the Oxford analogy. My wife watches a lot of British television (Masterpiece Theater); one of her favorites is a murder mystery centered at Oxford. Unlike U.S. murder mysteries which usually feature a single killing, there are never less than 2 or 3 at Oxford.
American graduate universities, dating back to Johns Hopkins' founding in 1876, have been built on the German professional model. Students are taught by scholars whose Ph.D. theses represent original scholarship, expanding the frontiers of knowledge and learning.
Uh, huh. Like most of my graduate cohort, we worked on campus, we didn't live there.
The last half-century has seen a huge increase in the percentage of Americans who go to college and a huge increase in government aid to them.... And the huge tranches of government money have been largely mopped up by the ever-increasing cadres of administrators, ... counselors, facilitators, liaisons and coordinators their student loans pay for.

[W]ould they be better off paying for such services only as needed, as most other adults do?
As the bubble bursts, the answer to the last question is obvious.
REALITY: what happens when other people quit giving you their money.
ED MORRISSEY: Why college professors are afraid to teach millenials. You created this environment, Jack. Now suck it up and live with your creation.
WHAT A WUSS! A Texas [female, sociology] college professor claims a coming law that will allow licensed gun owners to carry firearms on campuses will cause grades to shoot up.

This woman's such a delicate little flower that she probably stays in the shade for fear that her shadow will attack her.
THAT CESSNA flying over your house may be sending photos to your tax assessor. Soon they will be drones clay pigeons, and a shotgun will be the cure....
YES. NEXT QUESTION? Are we in for another high-crime era after the response to Ferguson and Baltimore?
SPACE.COM: Pluto's moons are even weirder than thought. Good article, but be prepared for obnoxious ads embedded in each video.

THE FUTURE of emergency medicine?

Harsh? I would tend to say so -- until I watch/listen to the mainstream media.
SPEAKING OF 'opting out' of the United State of Obama (see previous post): a new tool to fight the EPA.
MICHAEL BARONE: Is it time for civil disobedience of kludgeocratic bureaucracy?

Heh. Once again, the world is slowly catching up to me. I have posted frequently over the past six years that Americans should be civilly disobedient and ignore Obama, the Obama administration, and progressive nannies generally.

Welcome aboard.
