THE BRAVE NEW WORLD of the smart grid.
Overblown, but not necessarily inaccurate. Overblown, as existing smart technology only measures gross power consumption and would possibly affect your electricity bill if a variable rate structure was in effect. Not necessarily inaccurate, however, as control of 'smart appliances' is clearly in regulators' sight. As far as privacy goes, yes, there's room to worry if your power consumption consistently differs from that of your neighbors.
Reason enough to be increasingly wary of the power of big government.

FOX NEWS HOST Eric Bolling test drove the Chevy Volt at the invitation of General Motors. For four days in a row, [he found] the fully charged battery lasted only 25 miles before the Volt switched to the reserve gasoline engine.
Bolling calculated the car got 30 mpg including the 25 miles it ran on the battery, so the range including the 9 gallon gas tank and the 16 kwh battery is approximately 270 miles. That equates to a gasoline efficiency of 27.2 mpg and an electric efficiency of 1.56 m/kwh.
At my home, gasoline is $3.60/gallon and electricity is $0.114/kwh, so a 'full tank' would cost $34.22 or 12.7 cents/mile driven. Using electricity only (limiting the Volt to 25 miles/day or less than 9,000 miles/year) the cost per mile drops to a low of 7.3 cents/mile.
For a 500-mile road trip (about 10 hours with stops for gas) my Honda Pilot will get an average of 22 mpg at a cost of roughly 16 cents/mile. Taking the same trip (10 hours, one gasoline-only fill up) in a Volt will cost roughly 13 cents/mile (475 miles at 27.2 mpg plus $1.82 for electricity). For a 500-mile road trip in full-economy mode (electricity only), plan on taking roughly 8 days (210 hours) at a cost of $1.67 per mile (including food and hotel costs, since it takes 10 hours to recharge the Volt’s battery every 25 miles or so). Average speed … a bit less than 3 mph.
My Honda cost about $26,000; the Volt is a $250,000 car that sells for $35,000 after Obama’s $10,000 rebate.
So Obama wants me to pay 35% more for a car that costs about 10 times as much to drive cross-country and takes about 17 times as long to get there?
Really?
[Amusing Note]: $170,000 is the average income of the relatively few buyers of the $40,000 Volt to date.... Only Mercedes-Benz drivers, at an average $174,000 a year, earn more than Volt drivers. Their high income puts Volt buyers in the top 7% of households, according to census data, and slightly above the rankings held by households with BMWs, Lexuses or Cadillacs. It does not seem likely the Occupy Wall Street crowd will be lining up at their local GM dealer any time soon.

INSURANCE INDUSTRY could take hit from birth control mandate. The "cost assurances" of the Obama administration are so much hogwash; despite their valiant spin, there is still no such thing as a free lunch.
The significant unanswered question, it seems to me, is what to do about those companies that self-insure. Can a large self-insured company whose owners are, say, devout Catholics also qualify for religious exemption? Or is the Obama exemption just so much window dressing?

THE ORIGIN OF YODELING:
Many years ago a man was traveling through the mountains of Switzerland. From my email.
Nightfall was rapidly approaching and he had nowhere to sleep. He went up to a farmhouse and asked the farmer if he could spend the night. The farmer told him that he could sleep in the barn.
As the story goes, the farmer's daughter asked her father, "Who is that man going into the barn?"
"That fellow traveling through," said the farmer. "needs a place to stay for the night, so, I told him he could sleep in the barn."
The daughter said, "Perhaps he is hungry." So she prepared a plate of food for him and then took it out to the barn.
About an hour later, the daughter returned. Her clothing disheveled and straw in her hair. Straight up to bed she went.
The farmer's wife was very observant. She then suggested that perhaps the man was thirsty. So she fetched a bottle of wine, took it out to the barn, and she too did not return for an hour. Her clothing was askew, her blouse buttoned incorrectly. She also headed straight to bed.
The next morning at sunrise the man in the barn got up and continued on his journey, waving to the farmer as he left.
When the daughter awoke and learned that the visitor was gone, she broke into tears. "How could he leave without even saying goodbye," she cried. "We made such passionate love last night!"
"What?" shouted the father as he angrily ran out of the house looking for the man, who by now was halfway up the mountain.
The farmer screamed up at him, "I'm going to get you! You had sex with my daughter!"
The man looked back down from the mountainside, cupped his hand next to his mouth, and yelled out ...
"LAIDTHEOLADEETOO."
CUT SPENDING: Bring 401k's to the military. I very much doubt that it will significantly cut spending - at least in the short term - but it is still a very good idea, for the same reason as privatizing Social Security. Secondly, it takes 20 years to earn a military retirement; if you leave before 20 years, you get nothing. A 401k can be vested immediately; therefore even short-termers will leave with something as opposed to nothing.

NOTHING LIKE A FORD TRUCK.
I bought a new Ford F250 Tri-Flex Fuel Truck. Go figure, it runs on either hydrogen, gasoline, or E85. I returned to the dealer yesterday because I couldn't get the radio to work. The service technician explained that the radio was voice activated. And it was built by a company Obama didn't bail out.
'Nelson,' the technician said to the radio. The radio replied, 'Ricky or Willie?' 'Willie!' he continued and 'On The Road Again' came from the speakers. Then he said, 'Ray Charles!', and in an instant 'Georgia On My Mind' replaced Willie Nelson.
I drove away happy, and for the next few days, Every time I'd say, 'Beethoven,' I'd get beautiful classical music, and if I said, 'Beatles,' I'd get one of their awesome songs.
Yesterday, some guy ran a red light and nearly creamed my new truck, but I swerved in time to avoid him. I yelled, 'Ass Hole!' Immediately the radio responded with"Ladies and gentlemen, The President of The United States."Damn, I love this truck.

On MTP: “Well, one of the things about the United States Senate that I don’t think the American people realize is that it takes 60 not 50 votes to pass something. Not can't admit; won't admit.
On CNN: “We also need to be honest. You can’t pass a budget in the Senate of the United States without 60 votes and you can’t get 60 votes without bipartisan support.”
That is simply false: “The budget resolution…requires only a majority vote to pass, and its consideration is one of the few actions that cannot be filibustered in the Senate.”
Confusion when it comes to the budget law is nothing new for this Administration. The President’s budget request tomorrow is already past the deadline set by the 1974 Congressional Budget Act, the latest in a lengthy string of violations of their legal obligations.
Has the White House bothered to ask their party’s leaders in the U.S. Senate the real reason they refuse to prioritize the American people’s tax dollars? Is it that they can’t admit to how much more they want to take from hardworking American families in order to fuel their spending appetite?

EXPLAINING WHY ObamaCare is an abomination.
[T]he individual mandate inevitably leads to full-blown socialized medicine.... When the government mandates that you have to buy health insurance, then it has to specify what health insurance is required to satisfy the mandate. This means politics is involved in deciding what must be included and covered by that insurance. Some related thoughts here.
And once politics is involved, that means you can't leave anything out, as that would be taken as an offense and a slight to both the consumers and the providers of the excluded service. Mental health benefits and counseling, drug rehab, maternity benefits (even for men and seniors), abortion -- everything must be covered.

NEW YORK TIMES: World's Glaciers Losing Billions Of Tons Of Ice Per Year.
Quoting the same source, John Wahr, Fox News reports that the Himalayan glaciers have lost no ice in the past 10 years. US News & World Report, using the same source, reports Earth’s Polar Ice Melting Less Than Thought.
Same source, same data, different emphases to conclude with the “correct” narrative.
Here’s what I find facinating. In the reports, there are two sets of numbers bandied about: 230 billion tons of ice melt causing the oceans to rise 0.06 in/year (US News) and 150 billion tons of ice melt, causing the oceans to rise 0.4 mm/year (NYT).
So now let’s convert those numbers to a common baseline: mm/year per 100 billion tons of melt. The NYT numbers convert to 0.27 mm/year of ocean rise; the US News numbers convert to 0.66 mm/year. That’s roughly a 250% disparity.
And yet the NYT, with the lower number, has a decidedly gloomy headline while US News, with the much higher number, is decidedly optimistic.
Perhaps it would be wise to pay attention to Dr. Wahr: “Eight years of data is great, but it’s still hard to see any kind of trend or to say whether ice loss is accelerating. All I can say is that we have a better sense of the current state of the cryosphere.”
And check the math ....

TWO MORE SCIENTISTS jump the good ship ‘Global Warming’: “AGW theory functions best in a data free environment”.
CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE: It’s possible to sustain today’s level of federal spending and have a balanced budget.
No problem.
All that Congress would have to do is raise the lowest income tax bracket of 10 percent to 25 percent and the middle tax bracket of 25 percent to 66 percent and raise the 35 percent tax bracket to 92 percent.
No problem.
DRONES OVER U.S. is authorized by Congress. It’s interesting to read that the major concern is over privacy. I hope someone in thinking about the likelihood of using drones for terrorist attack. It’s doubtful that one can take down a tall building, but they sure as hell can punch holes in them.

COMMENTER HIRAGHM on this Michelle Malkin post about food stamps.
First comment:
First comment:
Your desire to masturbate doesn’t grant you the right to control my life. (the editorial “you” and “my” in this case). And no, I’ve never received food stamps.Second comment:
I’m not only sick of these back-door attempts to control my life, I’ m sick of alleged conservatives falling for it.
Oppose welfare if you want, go for it. But, to wax Randian for a moment, you can’t have Falstaff and have him thin. Either you live in a country that lets people, including children, starve to death, or you create this safety net to salve your own conscience.
Your payoff is not having to live in a country where children can starve to death. Your payoff is using tax payer dollars to make yourself feel all good and noble and warm and fuzzy.
Your payoff is not, cannot ever be, control over other humans’ lives. What next? Telling people they can only use food stamps at Wal-mart or Costco? Telling people they can only buy Borden milk with food stamps, and no other brand?
Alleged conservatives whine and moan about, to use an over-abused metaphor, giving a man a fish instead of teaching him to fish. What you want to do is give him a fishing pole, and because you gave him the fishing pole, dictating where he can fish, what kind of bait he can use, what size of fish he can keep, what kind of fish he can eat, how he can cook it.
What do you want? Do you want to help people become self-sufficient, or do you want to keep them alive so you can continue feeling superior to them? If you make these decisions for them, how and when are they going to develop the ability to make them for themselves? Even if they, in the future, continue buying only gov’t-approved foods, that’s Pavlovian reflex, not decision-making. And you’ve stolen their lives from them.
My elder brother, unfortunately, was taught using the “word-unit” method, unlike the rest of us. This meant he never learned to read a word he hadn’t been taught to read. Likewise, by dictating what a person can buy with food stamps or other welfare, they’ll never learn to make their own decisions about how to handle their money.
What really outrages me is this: this says to children, “Because your parents take food stamps, you can’t have candy. We want you to be alive, this doesn’t mean we want you to be happy.”
And the hilarious part of all this is, fine, they use food stamps only to buy milk and wheat germ, and broccoli and whatever other disgusting idiot food health nuts with gov’t influence dictate. That’ll still free up whatever other funds they get to buy awful products like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. So, it accomplishes nothing, except let the progressives climax over micro-managing other peoples’ lives.
In the Antebellum South, blacks had guaranteed employment, guaranteed shelter, guaranteed health care, guaranteed food. Someone else was paying for all of these things for them (quality of such is fodder for another argument).Third comment:
In return, they had no decisions to make; they were told where, when and how to work. Their food was selected for them. They got the healthcare someone else saw fit to give them. Their shelter was whatever someone else decided they should have.
In the Antebellum North, immigrants had no guarantee of shelter, employment, health care or food. (again, the abuse of workers during the same era is fodder for that other argument). They could work for whomever they chose; they could do whatever work they chose, they could live where ever they chose, they could eat whatever they chose, they could seek whatever health care they chose.
Why do we consider those Northern immigrants better off than the Southern blacks?
Welfare creates dependence; this is almost a conservative axiom. What is being suggested is that, what little improvement in a person’s life, (or family’s lives) is to be marginalized by taking away from them the decision-making that differentiates the free from the slave. To turn a program intended to buoy up people in temporary difficult straits into the chains of slavery.
If you don’t like the food choices they make using the food stamps, then stop the food stamp program, don’t use it as an excuse to control them.
I’m rofling at the sudden outbreak of progressivism on this blog.Read the whole post for context.
Do you *really* think the progressives *started* these “Great Society”, “New Deal” et al programs in order to help people? The goal all along was to control people. To set the precedent for a sugar tax, a Big Mac Tax (a tobacco tax, cough cough). Obamacare was the goal; how often do we hear politicians and other progressive-sounding idiots claim how much healthcare is costing “us”? There’s a commercial on TV proclaiming the costs of tobacco to companies due to lost productivity… ignoring entirely that said productivity doesn’t belong to the company, but the individual.
You either do-good because it’s the right thing to do, and accept that people will not behave as you would have them behave, or you look in the mirror and admit that you’re a heartless monster (to paraphrase Perry), and refrain from do-gooding.
I don’t care how rich you are, Mr Soros. You don’t get to buy slaves anymore.

OBAMA’S MIDDLE EAST POLICY:
Obama policy is more or less to be summed up by, let Israel do it on Monday, and then on Tuesday we will express “grave concern” and “deep regret” over such a “unilateral” escalation in tensions, as we breathe a sigh of relief and blame the troublesome Israelis once more for stirring up war in the region.Read it all.

OOPS! Global Warming Engine Unexpectedly Slows.
MORE: a global warming economics primer.
Preliminary reports from the Energy Information Administration’s “Annual Energy Outlook” (which will be fully published in April) suggest that any carbon crisis may not be quite as imminent as thought. Not so long ago, the EIA predicted carbon emissions levels would rise by 37 percent between 2005 and 2035. The EIA — get this – now thinks that global CO2 emissions in 2025 will be 6 percent lower than they were in 2005.Skeptics have finally put ‘global warming’ on the back burner (pun intended).
... snip ...
The truth is that forecasts about greenhouse gas emissions are basically worthless. These recent forecasts certainly were; the difference between 37 percent growth and 6 percent decline is 43 percent. That is about the level of accuracy you could expect from a blind monkey throwing darts at a wall.
But without those worthless forecasts, climate math falls to the ground. If we can’t predict the future level of greenhouse gas emissions, we can’t predict the future temperature of the earth — even assuming that our atmospheric models work perfectly and haven’t left anything out.
None of this suggests that we should ignore climate and energy issues, but it confirms my belief that climate activists tend to be bad logicians, and that the way forward has nothing to do with the cumbersome bureaucratic power grabs, crony capitalist porkfests (ethanol, Solyndra, high speed rail) and economic controls that misguided greens hope will save the planet.

The man replies, "Roughly a gallon."
