POWERLINE'S WEEK IN PICTURES: waitlist edition. Many good ones, but my favorite is this:

Click above to see them all.
FAA’S ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW finds no problems with Space-X launch site near Brownsville, Texas.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which had raised concerns about possible impact on habitat for some endangered species, ultimately concluded that "the project is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of any listed or proposed to be listed species nor adversely modify piping plover critical habitat."

But wildlife officials don't expect the project to be harmless: Two individual cats, either from the endangered ocelot or jaguarondi species, could be lost as a result of the project in spite of efforts to avoid just that with measures such as posting warning signs along the road leading to the launch site. And federal wildlife officials also anticipate that more than 7 miles of beachfront used by nesting sea turtles could be disturbed by security patrols, though driving is already permitted on the beach.
You can bet the environmentalists will go bonkers, though.

DIAPER NAMES:
I know you have been laying awake at night wondering why baby diapers have brand names such as "Luvs", "Huggies," and "Pampers', while undergarments for old people are called "Depends".

Well here is the low down on the whole thing.

When babies crap in their pants, people are still gonna Luv'em, Hug'em and Pamper em.

When old people crap in their pants, it "Depends" on who's in the will!

Glad I got that straightened out so you can rest your mind.
From my email.

LORD OBAMA AND THE PROGRESSIVE LEFT:
Obama represents their utopian dreams where an anointed technocracy, exempt from the messy ramifications of its own ideology, directs from on high a socially just society — diverse, green, non-judgmental, neutral abroad, tribal at home — in which an equality of result is ensured, albeit with proper exemptions for the better educated and more sophisticated, whose perks are necessary to give them proper downtime for their exhausting work on our behalf.
With emphasis on the 'proper exemptions' for the true believers.
NOW THAT'S A POLICE CAR:

VIRGINIA HAS A $300M REVENUE SHORTFALL, so the obvious answer is to expand Medicaid. The Democrats may have won the Governor's mansion, but thankfully the House of Delegates is solidly in Republican hands. Gov. McAuliffe has gone to the Democrat playbook threatening to shut the government down, but I don't think the Virginia Republicans will back down -- and they'll make sure he's blamed for shutting the government down.

OBAMA'S AMERICA:

From the Scorekeeper (#11).
MICHELLE OBAMA calls it ‘unacceptable’ for Congress to worry about edible school lunches. Because she knows that expensive and inedible is better for you.

Nothing like having a government know-it-all butt in to every facet of our lives....
EVEN A CACTUS is smarter than Harry Reid. And almost as prickly.
WASHINGTON EXAMINER: Government-run health care always puts system first, patients second last.

THE OBAMA WATCH: "a picture of an administration that is hopelessly superficial, dishonest, and incompetent."
ANOTHER CALL for big-government regulation.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.
RACISM THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS:
Racism, it seems, is a mutable element that rises and falls with President Obama's fortunes, receding to a small sliver of cranks in the early months of 2009, before he had a chance to mess up much of anything, then welling up again when he began pushing health care, and reaching gale force in the 2010 midterms, causing a massive resurgence of Ku Klux Klan sentiment that elected record numbers of non-white Republicans to high statewide office, and completely took over states such as Wisconsin, where Confederate feelings have always run high.
Read it all.
WILL THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA cover the House committee hearing on the International Panel on Climate Change [IPCC]?
[T]he House Committee on Science, Space and Technology chaired by Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas is holding a hearing Thursday on the reliability, or lack thereof, of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

As Washington Examiner columnist Ron Arnold makes clear in his column today, the hearing will have experts who are critical of the IPCC and who are supportive of its work.

Check Friday's editions of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other mainstream media outlets. Odds are they will either ignore the hearing completely or report only on evidence presented that supports the false consensus of the 97 percent.
Not a chance; the Committee is chaired by a (gasp!) Republican.
THAT WOULD BE GOOD: Most important casualty of Veterans Affairs scandal could be Obamacare.

MEMORIAL DAY IN MANASSAS. This year, instead of our usual visit to Arlington Cemetery and Rolling Thunder, we went to the National Cemetery in Quantico instead. Here are a couple of pictures:

I was surprised. The Quantico cemetery is large, but mostly drive-through and there is very little off-road parking. It was jammed with people, though it may not seem so from the pictures.

While we were there, we saw a motorcycle riding couple (obviously Vietnam era from Rolling Thunder yesterday) leaving coins on the headstones of some of the graves, so I inquired about the tradition. It's simply a sign of respect from a soldier to a comrade who has died. The denomination of the coin symbolizes the relationship.

The couple also told us about Honor Flight and Wreaths across America. I've had the distinct honor of meeting a few of the WWII veterans at the World War II and Korean War memorials in the past. Next year we hope to be more involved than we have been in the past.

Finally, on the way home, we crossed paths with this lady:

She was simply standing (by herself) quietly holding the flag for passers-by to see. Nothing more. It was a very somber -- and moving -- sight.
MEMORIAL DAY: A carnation lay atop the grave of an unknown Revolutionary War soldier. A reminder.
MEMORIAL DAY:
Friends,

This Memorial Day weekend, in cities and towns all over America, small red paper flowers will be worn and carried by Americans honoring our veterans.

The paper flowers symbolize the poppies WWI veteran John McCrae wrote about in his famous poem, “In Flanders Field,” after being struck by the beauty of the bright red blooms that emerged from the graves of his fellow soldiers.

But it was a Georgia teacher named Monia Michael who began the tradition of wearing the red flower in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms.

She had read a copy of McCrae’s poem in Ladies' Home Journal and then wrote her own poem that said:
Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet – to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
Those flowers became her torch. Millions of people, all across the world, have now worn paper poppies to honor the courage of servicemen and servicewomen.

We should all find our own way to carry on the torch of freedom.

May we never forget the lives of each solider; it is their blood that has kept us free. And it is their sacrifice that calls each of us to cherish the gift of liberty.

Please join me in pausing to remember those who have fallen.

We are so grateful that our nation has warriors who defend and protect us from harm.

May God bless you, may God bless Texas, and may God bless the United States of America.

DO TELL: Obama fails to show his vaunted ‘competence’.
NO, MOTHER JONES, Oklahoma isn't 'drying up' and its leaders aren't trying to block climate science education, they're trying to promote it. You blockheads just aren't paying attention.
FORTY-NINE IDIOTS -- excuse me, Democrat Senators -- sign letter urging NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to change the name of the Washington Redskins. This email has made the rounds before, but it's worth revisiting:

Here is an email sent to Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning a name change for the Washington Redskins.
Dear Mr. Page...

I always love your articles, and I generally agree with them. I would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name to the "Foreskins" to better represent their community, paying tribute to the dick heads in Congress. And here is some other political correctness to consider:

I agree with our Native American population . I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors, but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let's also ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians.

If your shorts are in a wad because the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. It's offensive to us white folk. The New York Yankees offend the Southern population . Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country so many young men's lives.

I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres.

Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged . We are talking about the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!

Finally, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message to our children . The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children. The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children .The Milwaukee Brewers - well that goes without saying..... Wrong message to our children.

So, there you go. We need to support any legislation to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the kind of thing the do-nothing congress loves....

As a die hard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this in mind, might also suggest changing the name of the Oregon State women's athletic teams to something other than the 'Beavers'.
And finally, I would suggest that in 2014 and 2016 the American voters change the names in the Senate and Presidency to something other than 'Democrat'.
WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS: Europe Wants a Supercomputer Made From Smartphones.
[I]n the tablet and smartphone age, it was probably only a matter of time before someone decided to make supercomputers out of the engines of present-day digital life. The thinking goes that because ARM cores are designed to run on small smartphone and tablet batteries, a supercomputer built around them could yield more speed with less power. In an age when high-performance computing, or HPC, is often constrained by heat production and electricity consumption, that could mean a more scalable machine.
ARM is an acronym within an acronym; it stands for Acorn (the original manufacturer) RISC [Reduced Instruction Set Computing] Machine and is essentially an architectural standard for the computing hardware inside your smart phone.

The 'Wheels Within Wheels' title is just a recognition of the 'circularity' of computing architectures over my lifetime: from small, simple computers to big, centralized computers; to personal computers; to networks of personal computers (the 'cloud'); to smart phones; to networks of smart phones.

Round and round she goes, and where she stops nobody knows....
SEND IN THE CLOWNS DEMOCRATS....
YOU MUST BE KIDDING! Taxpayers (i.e., we) paid $5.6M for climate-change games.

Unfortunately, no. It's simply more proof that progressives live in an alternate reality.
THE TRUTH ABOUT GUNS: New Jersey law would ban many common hunting rifles. If I lived in New Jersey, I could soon become a felon, as my old (~60 years, as my Dad gave it to me on my 10th birthday) Remington semi-automatic .22 would now be an 'assault weapon' because it has a greater than 10-round tubular magazine.

Interestingly, my new Henry .22 lever-action rifle, also with a greater than 10-round capacity, would not be banned (and I can fire it nearly as fast as I could the semi-automatic). And I can easily make a 'speed loader' for it out of a piece of 3/8" I.D. plastic or metal tubing.

The anti-gun nuts are indeed 'nuts'.

UPDATE: PowerLine notes that it's a litmus test of sorts for NJ Gov. Chris Christie.

AMBASSADOR CHRIS STEVENS was unavailable for comment.

The general rule for comments like these is that if there is a choice between malice and stupidity, choose stupidity. But with the Left, especially the progressive Left, I'm beginning to believe malice is the correct option.

Or most correctly, both: malicious stupidity.

DO THE MATH: How Opportunity Costs Multiply Tuition. In my case, the opportunity cost of my doctorate was about $180,000 -- and I worked at least half-time during my entire graduate school enrollment.

I did well during my subsequent career, but even now that I'm retired, I'm still not sure the additional education overcame the opportunity costs associated with it. That said, there are still good reasons for additional formal education -- the challenge is one, and the need to get a ticket punched another -- but earning higher wages is not one of them.
SCIENCE IS SCIENCE -- except when it isn't. I would only add that the cartoon applies equally with the change of two words: 'government' in place of 'corporate' and 'control' in place of 'profit'.
THOUGHTS ABOUT LIFE:
I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out.

I changed my car horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now.

You can tell a lot about a woman's mood just by her hands. If they are holding a gun, she's probably angry.

Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers.

You know that tingly little feeling you get when you really like someone? That's common sense leaving your body.

I don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around in the courtroom.

I didn't make it to the gym again today. That makes five years in a row.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the 'John' and renamed it the 'Jim'. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Dear paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers: If you find one, what's your plan?

A SMALL STEP TOWARD ADULTHOOD: I Lived A Completely Gun-Free Life — Until Now.

I would feel much more comfortable about her small step if instead of denigrating the NRA, she wrote that she and her husband had taken NRA-sponsored classed in gun safety and that they regularly went to a gun range to train, train, train.

Otherwise I'd prefer they continued to live a gun-free life.
HMMM. Maybe we're not in the midst of an 'income-inequality crisis' after all.

Instapundit also notices.

Somewhere I read that science draws supported conclusions from observed data; 'liberal science' draws supportive data from observed conclusions.

This seems to be another example of conclusions driving the search for supportive data.

Here's what he has to say:
Okay, here's the bombshell. The volcanic eruption in Iceland ... Since its first spewing of volcanic ash has, in just four days, negated every single effort you have made in the past five years to control CO2 emissions on our planet - all of you.

Of course, you know about this evil carbon dioxide that we are trying to suppress - it’s that vital chemical compound that every plant requires to live and grow and to synthesize into oxygen for us humans and all animal life.

I know ... it's very disheartening to realize that all of the carbon emission savings you have accomplished while suffering the inconvenience and expense of driving Prius hybrids, buying fabric grocery bags, sitting up till midnight to finish your kids "The Green Revolution" science project, throwing out all of your non-green cleaning supplies, using only two squares of toilet paper, putting a brick in your toilet tank reservoir, selling your SUV and speedboat, vacationing at home instead of abroad, nearly getting hit every day on your bicycle, replacing all of your 50p light bulbs with £5 light bulbs ... well, all of those things you have done have all gone down the tubes in just four days.

The volcanic ash emitted into the Earth's atmosphere in just four days - yes, FOUR DAYS - by that volcano in Iceland has totally erased every single effort you have made to reduce the evil beast, carbon. And there are around 200 active volcanoes on the planet spewing out this crud at any one time - every day.

I don't really want to rain on your parade too much, but I should mention that when the volcano Mt. Pinatubo erupted in the Philippines in 1991, it spewed out more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than the entire human race had emitted in all its years on earth.

Yes, folks, Mt. Pinatubo was active for over one year - think about it!

Of course, I shouldn't spoil this 'touchy-feely tree-hugging' moment and mention the effect of solar and cosmic activity and the well-recognized 800-year global heating and cooling cycle, which keeps happening despite our completely insignificant efforts to affect climate change.

And I do wish I had a silver lining to this volcanic ash cloud, but the fact of the matter is that the bush fire season across the western USA and Australia this year alone will negate your efforts to reduce carbon in our world for the next two to three years. And it happens every year.

Just remember that your government just tried to impose a whopping carbon tax on you, on the basis of the bogus 'human-caused' climate-change scenario.

Hey, isn’t it interesting how they don’t mention 'Global Warming' anymore, but just 'Climate Change' - you know why? It’s because the planet has cooled by 0.7 degrees in the past few years and these global warming bull artists got caught with their pants down.

And, just keep in mind that you might yet have an Emissions Trading Scheme - that whopping new tax - imposed on you that will achieve absolutely nothing except make you poorer. It won’t stop any volcanoes from erupting, that’s for sure.

But, hey, relax. Give the world a hug and have a nice day!

AIRBUS AND KLM ROYAL DUTCH AIRLINES have completed a 10-hour flight from Amsterdam to Aruba using sustainable jet fuel, the longest biofuel flight to date. The aircraft took off with a 20% blend of sustainable fuel made of used cooking oil for the 10-hour flight from Amsterdam to the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.

GRASPING AT STRAWS, California's Gov. Moonbeam uses state's wildfires to lecture on climate change. I lived there for 5 years, Jerry. SELF-BECLOWNING: Higher education is becoming a joke -- a bad joke.
UNDER OBAMACARE, she pays $987 a month.

$987 times 13 months is $12,831 -- that's more than I've spent on medical care in the last 10 years. Government 'regulation' of health care is a scam of epidemic proportions.

The adjectives I'v added [in brackets] indicate Gerson's implicit assumption that if you're skeptical of the Liberals' political science of global warming climate change climate disruption, then you must be a religious bible-thumping conspiracy theorist afraid of GMO foods, cell phones, vaccinations, and evolution (to name just a few).

And yet Gerson himself exhibits a quaint quasi-religious faith in highly complex computer models that can't even correctly predict the past. He doesn't seem to be able to recognize that science, true science, is based on human observations, common sense, testable hypotheses, rigorous testing, and yes ... vigorously expressed skepticism.

Not faith.

THE TERRIBLE TRUTH about income inequality.
Washington corruption -- in the pattern of Vladimir Putin -- is driving inequality and sinking family incomes. Higher taxes may catch your family doctor in the near future but politicians will still find a way to exempt their supporters among the very wealthy.

Politicians offering ordinary voters a free ride on taxes, subsidized health care and other enticements are really picking their pockets by giving the country away to the oligarchs.

'GAMIFICATION': gaming in the workplace.
Playing video games instead of doing your work might sound like a surefire way to get in trouble at the office. But some employers encourage game playing, and even use it as a path to promotion.

Gamification—a relatively new word that stands for applying game-design thinking to non-game applications—has been used in several industries and is now making its way into offices. Gartner, a research firm based in Stamford, Conn., predicts that nearly 2000 global organizations will be using gamification to train their employees and track their performance by the end of this year. And in February, IEEE announced that its experts predict that over the next six years, gaming will be integrated into more than 85 percent of daily activities, which include tasks in the workplace.

There's a lot of truth to that statement. My new AR-15 is a beautiful weapon and a joy to shoot, but it's a lot of rifle for someone who no longer hunts and now only shoots at paper targets. Nevertheless, just in case at some point in the future I need it, I'll have it.

HYPOCRISY ALERT.
GEORGE WILL mocks #BringBackOurGirls hashtag activism as an exercise in liberal self-esteem.

I do think that Julie Pace does a point in saying that the 'social media' may possibly have an effect in driving government(s) to actually do something. But that was true prior 'hashtag activism'; witness the Tea Party in 2010, which had a much longer-lasting effect, and was accomplished by much more than posting 'selfies' from the basement.

NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE: Our condolences to Harry Reid:
The Editors would like to extend our condolences to Senator Harry Reid and his family as they go through this difficult time. While we can only guess at the exact nature of the psychiatric or neurological trauma the Senate majority leader has suffered, we assume that it is severe, judging by his symptoms, the most prominent of which is his new habit of taking to the Senate floor to deliver speeches that sound like they ought to be coming from a man wearing a bathrobe in front of a liquor store in Cleveland.
